General
During the 19th century this lovely cottage was the Wharf Master's office, and more recently was owned by Frances Shand Kydd, Princess Diana's mother. Greaves Wharf House has now been converted into a ground floor 2 bedroomed holiday apartment sleeping up to 4 people in a double bedroom and a twin bedroom. Well behaved pets are also welcome.
The cottage is situated in a fantastic location with the harbour wall just 20 yards from your front door and adjacent to the slipway into the harbour. Further up the street there are a couple of pubs and a nice restaurant all within walking distance. The bustling main street of Porthmadog is only a 5 minute walk away where you will find an array of small, locally owned shops, pubs & restaurants as well as a supermarket at the end of the high street. As part of the Welsh Coastal Path there is a lovely short but steep 20 minute walk from Porthmadog harbour to the nearby village of Borth-y-Gest. Here you will find a couple of lovely cafes overlooking the estuary and if you continue onwards you will come to Borth-y-Gest beach.
Porthmadog sits on Afon Glaslyn estuary, where it then flows into Tremadog Bay. The town’s temperate climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream which means the area is a haven for migrating birds such Oystercatchers, Redshanks and Curlews so be sure to bring your binoculars with you. A short walk over the bridge at the harbour brings you to the terminus location of the narrow gauge railway for the Ffestiniog Railway. Here you can take a day trip up the mountain to the old slate mines at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Alternatively, from the same station the Welsh Highland Railway offers a day trip to the port town of Caernarfon with its imposing Castle.
Whilst in the area a trip to the famous Italian style village of Portmerion is not to be missed. Built by Sir Clough William Ellis between 1925 and 1975 you will almost feel like you are on the Italian Riviera. On a summer’s day you can easily spend a full day here the exploring the beautiful grounds, have a leisurely lunch overlooking the water and soak up the atmosphere of this extraordinary but beautiful attraction. After a busy day return to your cosy accommodation to relax or head out to one of the local eateries.
