These superb and totally renovated to a very high standard canalside holiday cottages are located in tranquil waterside settings on both the Caledonian Canal and Crinan Canal in Scotland and the Scottish Highlands. These cottages offer a very distinctive and luxurious self catering holiday in beautiful locations offering great views over these popular and active waterways.
The cottages are very individual and are either old lock keepers cottages or canal workers cottages with classic British engineering still in operation and in full view
Caledonian Canal – The majestic Caledonian Canal is considered by many as one of the greatest waterways of the world. Running from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east, this 60 mile coast to coast channel passes through exciting towns and villages, spectacular lochs, and beautiful countryside.
The Caledonian Canal represents a triumph of British civil engineering innovation, is littered with iconic features and makes a significant contribution to the breath-taking landscape of the Great Glen. Its cultural significance should be regarded as being of international, not just national, importance.
Originally the ‘Tomnahurich Bridge’ Keeper’s house, this lovely holiday cottage is set on the banks of the Caledonian Canal in a semi-rural waterfront position alongside the Tomnahurich Swing Bridge. Located just 1 mile from the centre of Inverness.
‘Sandray Cottage’ is one of three former canal worker cottages making up a pretty hamlet of holiday homes at Kytra Lock, a tranquil and secluded waterside spot just outside Fort Augustus on the Caledonian Canal.

‘Telford House East’ is a semi-detached property in a sought after waterfront location. This former lock keeper’s house stands proud on Neptune’s Staircase, a stunning flight of eight locks on the Caledonian Canal. With superb views along the canal and across to Ben Nevis, it’s a great base for four to explore the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles.
‘Laggan Bridge Cottage’ was originally built as a canal worker’s cottage in the late 18th century; the property enjoys a waterfront position alongside the Laggan Swing Bridge with beautiful views across Loch Oich. Laggan Bridge Cottage is situated only 10 miles south of Fort Augustus and 22 miles north east of Fort William, in the heart of the Highlands.
‘Vatersay’ is one of three former canal worker cottages making up a pretty hamlet of holiday homes at Kytra Lock, a tranquil and secluded waterside spot just outside Fort Augustus on the Caledonian Canal. The cottages boast polished wood floors downstairs and period fireplaces.
Crinan Canal – Every year nearly 2,000 boats make the journey along the 9 miles of “Britain’s most beautiful shortcut”. Once an important commercial connection with the Western Isles most of the traffic is now pleasure craft. The area is called ‘Dalriada’- an ancient coastal kingdom at the Heart of Argyll.
The Crinan Canal links Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig with the Sound of Jura, creating a vital waterway through the Kintyre peninsula in the Heart of Argyll.
‘Bannatyne’ Holiday Cottage is located at Lock 11 on the Crinan Canal at Cairnbaan, in the heart of Argyll. The canal creates a vital 9 mile waterway link through the KintyrePeninsula and is often referred to as “Britain’s most beautiful shortcut”. Guests at Bannatyne will certainly agree.
Bannatyne cottage is easily accessed by car from Glasgow, via scenic Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. From Cairnbaan visitors can explore the idyllic Western Isles with ferry services operating from Oban and Kennacraig. The cottage was recently restored by Scottish Canals and we are delighted to be offering quality self-catering holidays in such a picturesque part of Scotland.
All the cottages sleep 4 except Vatersay which sleeps 5 in 3 bedrooms and are available for a holiday let and short breaks & weekend getaways throughout the year.
