Our Holiday in Cornwall 2016
We only stayed in Cornwall for a week but so many great memories. We arrived at our lodge at Lakeview Country Club near Llanivet after experiencing really heavy rain on the way down which was not boding well. We need not have worried as it never rained again our whole week.
A glass of wine in hand and BBQ fired up outside our lodge, we had a look at our Cornwall visitors guide which the owners left out for us. So much to see and do but what shall we do with our grown up kids that will keep them all entertained?
We need not have worried as it all panned out just great and here are a few of our adventures and experiences we enjoyed on our holiday in Cornwall.
Polkerris Beach – small but pretty beach & harbour with one pub called the Rashleigh Arms and another popular restaurant called ‘Sams’. We hired out canoes and explored the little coves and inlets and the kids were all jumping off the harbour wall.
Go Karting at St Eval – competitive as ever and such fun as we sped round the long convoluted track, I think we all crashed or spun at some point.
Marazion – Homemade Cornish Pasties overlooking St Michaels Mount whilst waiting for the tide to go out before we ventured and paddled over to the impressive St Michaels Mount for an ice cream.
St Michaels Mount – impressive part time tidal island run by the National Trust with a pretty chapel and church and does excellent ice creams.
Dinner in St Ives – wander the bustling cobbled streets of this seaside harbour town and enjoyed a hearty pub meal and local beers on the beachfront overlooking all the fishing boats
Catching Crabs at Fowey – after two hours the guys had all caught a range of crabs from small to quite enormous using mackerel heads and pigs trotters as bait. Meanwhile whilst the kids were catching dinner we hired out two ‘sit-on-top’ kayaks and navigated around the harbour and across to Polruan admiring some of the lovely sailing boats, harbour cottages and cruisers.
Breakfast at Charlestown Harbour – Easy to see why this is being used for the popular Poldark Series as there were some beautiful old square riggers and tall ships in old protected harbour. Had a lovely cooked breakfast at ‘Wreckers’.
Eden Project and the Skywire – Wow, such fun. First, two of us braved the 660m zipwire, flying over the golf ball domes of the Eden project at 60mph which was exhilarating. We all then more sedately wandered round the tropical forests, rainforests and discovery trails.
Lusty Glaze Beach at Newquay – Love this enclosed beach with hearty set of steps down into it. Protected from the wind and good waves it was fun surfing and belly-boarding on the sunniest day of the lot. A few beers from the beach bar at sundown made it a great end to a great day
Speedboat ride in Padstow Harbour – After fish and chips on the harbour wall (real tourists!). A mooch around this popular fishing village was followed by an exciting power boat ride around the estuary. Ok, so we all regularly got a face full of salty seaspray but it was hard to wipe the smiles of the faces.
Port Isaac – This pretty fishing village is well known for being the home to the TV series Doc Martin. We skimmed stones on the beach and had some lovely cornish ice cream on the slipway with the fishing boats and the fragrant lobster pots.
Country Club at Lakeview – we enjoyed the swimming pool, the gym, tennis, golf driving range and short par 3 golf course (lost quite a few balls!). Perhaps should have tried the on-site wakeboarding but just ran out of time.
Rashleigh Arms at Polkerris – we enjoyed this beach so much we went back for more. Frisbee and boule on the beach followed by dinner for our last night which was a treat. Joe Bonnamassa playing background blues on guitar (on the CD sadly). Fabulous food and fun, friendly atmosphere, this was a lovely way to sign off from Cornwall.
So much to see and do and so little time, looks like we will just have to come back to Cornwall again and visit some of those other lovely beaches we were recommended.
