Surf & Turf on the Caledonian Canal

The Caledonian Canal is regarded as one of the greatest waterways in the world, and a feat of exceptionally impressive engineering. The canal stretches from coast to coast – from inverness to Fort William, and incorporates several lochs: Loch Dochfour, Loch Ness, Loch Oich, Loch Lochy.

The Caledonian Canal was constructed with commercial purposes in mind, but advances in shipbuilding and the end of the Napoleonic Wars prevented both commercial and naval shipping. Instead, it became a popular tourist destination – and it is still one today: the Caledonian Canal is a great holiday destination for those that love the outdoors.

The Canal, and the surrounding area, is perfect for active holidaymakers – it offers great boating opportunities, can be explored by paddle boats, and is excellent for fishing salmon and sea trout. Nature lovers can see a diverse range of Scottish wildlife, including Dolphins in the Moray Firth.

For those less enthusiastic about taking to the water, the area surrounding the Caledonian Canal is excellent for walking and cycling and Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, is located at the western end of the Loch.
